But real influence? That comes from resonance. From meaning. From creativity that actually touches someone.

In this quick hit episode, we explore:

Why studying the algorithm is studying the output, not the input.

How podcasts build emotional environments other platforms can’t.

The importance of creativity, feeling, and deep human insight in content.

Why asking AI to “make something cool” will never work (and what to do instead).

What martial arts can teach us about content that actually lands.

Whether you're a podcaster, content creator, or brand strategist—this one's a wake-up call.

Subscribe for more insights on the intersection of podcasting, creativity, and digital strategy.</itunes:subtitle><itunes:author>Jon Savage</itunes:author><itunes:image href="https://assets.flightcast.com/workspaces/n658pjcfd066gl4p2aphfu00/podcasts/uyu1u3e4zzreqvxorpcjhmnn/xdqeeldp8v8fyxxrpi6cpzju.jpg"></itunes:image><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:duration>213</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:episode>29</itunes:episode><itunes:summary>
00:00 - Intro: What Marketers Have Forgotten

00:35 - The Limits of Algorithm Obsession

01:20 - Inspiration vs Imitation: Why Output Isn’t Enough

02:00 - The AI Shoe Example: Can Cool Be Computed?

02:38 - Martial Arts & Content: What Connection Really Means

03:20 - Final Thoughts: Build for Resonance, Not Just Reach

Spoiler alert it's not just ads. Welcome to the Digital Savage. Before we get started, I just want to let you know that over 70% of people who listen to this podcast or watch it regularly never hit subscribe. And it's completely free. And it makes a huge difference to me, because subscribing tells the algorithm that this content is valuable, which helps me grow the podcast, bring on guests, which I'm going to start doing and create even more impact for you. If you've ever enjoyed an episode of Digital Savage, subscribing is the best way to support this journey and it only takes a second. Okay, so you think Joe Rogan is making money from Spotify streams? Nope. His 200 million deal is licensing. He doesn't even need ads.
Speaker 1 00:00:59 He sold his exclusive rights to his podcast, and he's not the only one. Bill Simmons bagged $250 million from Spotify for The Ringer Network. And then there's the real power play with ownership. Look at Alex Cooper's call her daddy. She walked away from Barstool Sports, got a 60 million deal from Spotify, $60 million deal, and kept the rights to her brand, and then licensed it again to Sirius XM for $125 million. That's boss level podcasting. Let's talk about Africa. Our biggest podcast is making Bank, not just from YouTube ads, but from brand partnerships, live events, merch, and a whole lot more. And that's a whole revenue stream most podcasters ignore. And Puma, Ledwaba Mack, Cisco are all selling out venues with their live podcasts and a Nigeria that I said what I said podcast launched an entire subscription club where fans pay to be part of an exclusive community. No sponsors, no middlemen, just direct audience cash. And here's the real play. If you're a podcaster, you need at least three income streams, minimum for examples.
Speaker 1 00:01:59 Obvious ones sponsorships. But don't rely just on this. Brands can drop you any time. Merch and digital products. These are masterclasses, ebooks, templates sell to your audience here. Tata rampage is a genius. You check out what he's doing with his books and stuff. Amazing. Third membership subscriptions. These are direct fan support and freedom if you can get it right from your audiences. Even though in South Africa and Africa we're quite snip at doing that. So you can't rely on that either. And finally, this is a big one. Licensing and exclusive deals. If you can build a powerful brand, companies will pay for exclusive rights to it. If you're only relying on YouTube ads or Spotify streams, you're leaving money on the table. The diary of a CEO, Mac Gee VC, Timber Choir, The Money Show Panel, and Ledwaba El Tito. These aren't just podcasts that the new entertainment giants. And here's the crazy part. These podcast hosts aren't TV executives and not Hollywood backed celebrities that people who've just built their own platforms no network execs controlling them, no scripts, no censorship, just raw, authentic conversations that people actually want to hear. Look at what happened with Trevor Noah. He left The Daily Show. And what's his next move? Not another TV gig. He's doing a podcast. Why? Because podcasting is where the audience is shifting to. And here's where it gets even more insane. Podcasting is now creating TV shows. Take serial. It was just an investigative audio podcast, and boom, it's now become an HBO series. Even Smart List with Jason Bateman and his crew. They built a podcast so big that Amazon paid them $80 million just to stream it as a video show on Prime. Podcasts aren't replacing TV, they are TV now. And this isn't just happening in the US. In Africa, we're seeing the exact same shift. Take Maxis podcasts and chill on Waba. They're not just podcasters. They're literally South Africa's most watched talk shows. Forget mainstream television podcasts are building empires on YouTube. I said what I said in Nigeria. These ladies started as a niche podcast. Now they're one of the most influential lifestyle brands in West Africa. And people aren't just listening, they're tuning in like it's a full on reality show podcast taking over because audiences want real conversations, not polished scripts. They want deep dives, not five minute TV interviews. And best of all, they want choice podcasts. Let them listen whenever, whatever, and however they want. So what's coming down the pike? In my opinion, Video podcasting is about to dominate. YouTube is already the biggest podcasting platform in the world. I read the other day that they had 1 billion podcast stream last month. Not Spotify, not Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and that's why YouTube just launched its own podcast homepage and why people like Logan Paul, DJ fresh, Spew or Trap and Pass. They are thriving there. In a few years, every major podcast will have a visual version. And what's even crazier? Networks like Netflix and Amazon are starting to sign podcasters the way they used to sign comedians and actors. So imagine this the first African podcast talk show on Netflix, and it's coming. So it's just a matter of time. So if you're a podcaster or even thinking about starting one, here's my advice think bigger. You're not just competing with the other podcasters anymore. You're competing with TV, with Hollywood, with entertainment giants. And guess what? You can win because the future isn't in scripted, overproduced shows. The future is in real voices, real conversations and real connection. And that's what podcasting is all about. Let me know in the comments. Do you think podcasts will replace TV or will they coexist? Have you subscribed yet? Why not?

AFRICA PODCAST NETWORK

</itunes:summary>

How Joe Rogan Became The King Of Podcasting

Love him or hate him. There's no denying Joe Rogan is the king of podcasting. But how did he go from a stand up comedian and a UFC commentator to the host of the world's biggest podcast? Today we're breaking down the success of The Joe Rogan Experience. From the analytics behind his massive reach to key moments that will define his career. Most importantly, when you look at what you can learn from his journey to apply to your own podcast, break.

First, let's talk numbers. Joe Rogan didn't just stumble into podcasting greatness. His reach is mind blowing. Now let's break down some of the stats. As of 2024, Rogan's podcast consistently averages around 11 million listeners per episode. And to put that in perspective, that's more than Game of Thrones. As final season viewers per episode, he's doing it every week, his audience spans globally, and he dominates in both the US and international market. One of the biggest moments in Rogan's career was his exclusive licensing deal with Spotify in 2020.

That reported $100 million. Deal was a game changer not just for Rogan, but for the entire podcasting industry. He's no longer just a podcaster. He became the podcast, and the move to Spotify allowed him to control his content while expanding his reach to Spotify's more than 450 million users. Rogan's episodes aren't your typical 30 minute podcasts. They often run three hours or more, yet he holds his audience's attention for the entire length. Rogan creates an engaging conversation, not just a scripted interview. He lets the conversation flow naturally, which draws listeners in and makes them feel like they're sitting in the room with him. And you can see now there are many copycats. Now let's zoom in on some of the key moments that really propelled Rogan's podcast to new heights and see what we can learn from it. One of the big ones was the Elon Musk interview. Rogan's 2018 interview with Elon Musk is one of the most iconic episodes in podcast history. It wasn't just the fact that Musk smoked a joint live on air, it was the way Rogan pulled out a deep philosophical insight from one of the world's most innovative minds.

That episode alone has been viewed more than 60 million times on YouTube. So what can we learn? Rogan shows that it's not just about who you have on your show, but how you approach the conversation. Being able to extract those unexpected insights from high profile guests keeps listeners hooked. In 2019, Rogan interviewed Bernie Sanders during the presidential primaries, and this episode solidified Rogan's influence in politics as Sanders chose Rogan's platform over traditional news outlets. Rogan became known as a voice for open dialogue, giving space to both left and right wing thinkers, and this helped him broaden his audience. Podcasters can learn from Rogan's ability to make his show a neutral ground for different perspectives. He lets his guests talk, he gives them space, and this non-confrontational approach has made his podcast a trusted place for controversial and important conversations. Then in 2020, Rogan made headlines with his exclusive deal with Spotify. This was a landmark moment, not just because of the money involved, but because it showed the true value of podcasting as a medium. The move to Spotify also allowed Rogan to control his content without worrying about YouTube censorship.

This shows the power of building your brand to a point where you can make strategic decisions about distribution. Rogan starred on Spotify, but by the time he moved, he'd built enough leverage to make it a win win deal. So what makes Joe Rogan's podcast such a juggernaut? Let's try and unpack the formula for his success authenticity. We know this one. First and foremost. Rogan is authentic as you can be. He doesn't pretend to know everything. He's not overly polished. His genuine curiosity is one of the reasons people love tuning in. He's not afraid to ask dumb questions, and that makes his show feel relatable. And as a podcaster, don't be afraid to show your real self. If you're genuinely interested in your topic and your guests, your audience will feel that authenticity breeds loyalty. Diverse topics Rogan doesn't stick to one niche. One day he's talking to a scientist, the next he's chatting to a comedian or a UFC fighter. His open ended topics allow for endless interpretations and appeal to a broader audience, and that's why he's able to get such a diverse range of guests and listeners.

When choosing your podcast topic, make sure it's broad enough to keep things fresh but still relevant to your audience. The more flexibility you have, the longer you can keep your show interesting, man. Another key to Joe Rogan's success is consistency. He has been podcasting for over a decade, starting in 2009, and his relentless schedule of producing multiple episodes a week has built him an enormous backlog of content, and this long term approach is crucial. You need patience and a long term vision. Rogan didn't become the world's biggest podcaster overnight, consistently producing content and building your audience bit by bit over time is how you'll eventually hit your stride. Let's recap on how you can apply Rogan's success strategies to your own podcast. Focus on authenticity. Don't try to copy everybody else. Just bring your own voice and style to the table. Choose open ended topics. Pick topics that have room to grow and evolve Rogan's podcast work because it's not boxed into one niche. He can talk about MMA one day and space travel the next.

Think about how you can create that kind of flexibility in your show. And most importantly, be patient and play the long game. Patience is key. Rogan's massive success didn't come overnight. He consistently put in the work for years before hitting it big. Keep going, even when it feels like you're not getting the results you want right away. So whether you love him or hate him, Joe Rogan has shown the world what's possible with podcasting. Authenticity, consistency and an open minded approach to topics are your keys to success and his. And the best part? Use these strategies for your own podcast and carve out your own success story.
